Balance and dizziness disorders affect people of all ages. Vertigo is the sensation of movement (including spinning) of either yourself or the external environment. In many cases, vertigo is the result of something affecting the vestibular system of the inner ear.

Audiologists at the Ear & Hearing Clinic can assess whether your dizziness is being caused by a vestibular problem and offer BPPV treatment or vestibular rehabilitation therapy when appropriate.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. In this condition, vertigo will typically come on with head movement (e.g. laying down, rolling over in bed, tying your shoe) and usually lasts less than a minute, although feelings of unsteadiness or nausea may persist. In most cases, BPPV can be successfully treated in one to two appointments.

At Ear & Hearing Clinic we have three audiologists who are certified in Vestibular Assessment & Management and are specially trained in the treatment of Vestibular disease.
Alison Burton - Audiologist
Alison Burton earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick in 2006 and a Master of Clinical Science from the University of Western Ontario in 2009. She joined the Ear and Hearing Clinic team in July 2009 and works out of our Kitchener location. Alison has been the Ear & Hearing Clinic’s lead Infant Hearing Program (IHP) audiologist since 2011. She completed advanced training in vestibular and balance disorders at the American Institute of Balance under Dr. Richard Gans in 2012 and 2017.
Juliana Schlegel - Doctor of Audiology
Dr. Schegel received a Bachelor of Arts with honours majoring in Psychology and Linguistics (1993) while studying at Brock University. She later earned her Master of Clinical Science in 1997 from the University of Western, Ontario. She completed her studies with a Doctorate in Audiology in 2004 while attending the Arizona School of Health Sciences. Juliana has a keen interest in vestibular and balance disorders. She completed her Vestibular Assessment & Management certification under Dr. Richard Gans at the American Insitute of Balance in Florida in 2016. This allowed Juliana to become specially trained in the treatment of BPPV.
Rachel Dingle - Audiologist
Rachel Dingle received her honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2005 and then completed a Masters (2008) and a Doctorate (2012) at Dalhousie University. She completed her Masters in Clinical Science (Audiology) at Western University (2015). Rachel has a strong interest in tinnitus and auditory processing. She completed her Tinnitus Retraining Therapy certification under Dr. Powel Jastreboff in 2015 and her Vestibular Assessment & Management certification under Dr. Richard Gans at the American Institute of Balance in Florida in 2016.
